Privacy Policy

overlanding.tools ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what data is collected when you visit overlanding.tools, how it is used, and your choices regarding that data.

Data We Collect

overlanding.tools does not collect any personal information directly. We do not require registration, accounts, or any form of sign-up. However, we use third-party services that may collect data on our behalf, subject to your consent.

Google Analytics 4: We use Google Analytics 4 to measure pages visited and other usage information. Analytics loads by default only after our server verifies that the visit is outside the EEA, UK, Switzerland and the EU territories covered by our consent flow, and only if you have not rejected non-essential cookies. You can reject using the banner or the footer "Cookie settings" control. In covered regions, and while the region is unknown, we do not load Google Analytics or send cookieless analytics pings. Google processes analytics data under its privacy policy.

Google AdSense: We use Google AdSense for advertising. Once the region is verified, its library loads for visitors who have not rejected non-essential cookies. In covered regions, Google's certified consent message manages advertising choices through its own consent record; our local banner cannot accept on its behalf. A rejected visitor can explicitly choose "Manage consent with Google" to load the Google library and reopen those controls without accepting. Embedded calculators never load our analytics, advertising or consent-region lookup.

Cookies and Local Storage

We use the following cookies and browser storage:

• overland_consent: A cookie stored for 365 days that records your local acceptance or rejection, or that your choice is managed by Google's certified consent controls. The Google-managed marker does not itself grant any consent category. This functional cookie is used to honor your choice.
• overland_units: Stored in localStorage (not a cookie). Records your unit preference (US or Metric) so your selection persists across visits. No expiration; cleared when you clear browser storage. No data is transmitted to any server.
• overland_build: Stored in localStorage (not a cookie) only if you save a vehicle profile on the My Build page. Holds the specs you enter (GVWR, curb weight, tire size, axle ratio, lift, roof limit) so calculators can prefill them. First-party and functional: never transmitted to a server, never shared, and never used for advertising. Clear it any time from the My Build page or by clearing browser storage.
• Google advertising cookies: first-party cookies Google AdSense may set on this domain. If you reject non-essential cookies, every advertising category is denied and we delete the advertising cookies we know Google sets here — specifically __gads, __gpi, __eoi, __gsas and any cookie whose name begins _gcl_ — both immediately and again shortly afterwards, in case the ad library writes one while it is still finishing. Advertising already rendered on the page you are on continues until you navigate away or reload; on later page views the AdSense library is not loaded automatically while that rejection remains. You may explicitly load Google's consent controls as described below. A cookie Google sets on this domain under some other name is not covered by that list and is left in place, and cookies Google sets on its own domains (such as doubleclick.net) are outside this site and cannot be reached by us at all; clear your browser cookies to remove the first, and manage the second through Google My Ad Center, or clear your browser cookies. • Google Analytics cookies: _ga, _ga_<id>, _gid and related cookies distinguish users and sessions. These may be set after a visit is verified as eligible for our local consent flow and are removed if you reject non-essential cookies. Our analytics does not load in covered or unknown regions.

Google Consent Mode v2

Every page starts with analytics_storage, ad_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization denied. A same-origin request uses Cloudflare's country metadata to determine which consent flow applies; the response contains only a consent-region classification and is not cached or saved between visits. Missing or invalid information leaves consent denied. In verified regions where the local flow is available, analytics is enabled unless you rejected, and "Accept all" grants the four categories. In covered regions, our locally managed Consent Mode categories stay denied and Google uses its certified advertising consent record. A stored local acceptance or an elapsed timeout cannot bypass that flow.

Affiliate Links

Some pages on overlanding.tools contain affiliate links to products on third-party retailers (such as Amazon). If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, overlanding.tools may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Affiliate links do not affect our calculator results or product recommendations. Clicking an affiliate link may result in that retailer setting cookies on your device according to their own privacy policy.

Third-Party Services

overlanding.tools uses the following third-party services:

• Cloudflare: Website hosting and a per-visit country-based consent classification. The classification endpoint does not return your IP address, country code or precise location to the page.
• Google LLC: Google Analytics 4 and Google AdSense. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.

We do not sell, rent, or share personal data with any other third parties.

Your Choices

While the consent banner is showing, you may reject non-essential cookies by clicking "Reject non-essential". When you reject, every advertising and analytics consent category is denied immediately, and the Google Analytics and first-party Google advertising cookies described above are deleted from this domain, within the limits noted in that list; on subsequent visits neither Google Analytics nor Google AdSense is loaded automatically while that rejection remains — no analytics cookies, no cookieless pings, and no automatic ad script.

Changing your mind after you have chosen. Once you have made a choice covering everything the banner currently asks about, we record it and stop showing the banner. To reopen it, the footer of this site carries a "Cookie settings" button (wherever your browser runs JavaScript, which this site's cookie and advertising features require in any case): withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it. Your existing choice is left in place until you make a new one, so opening it does not itself change anything. (A calculator embedded in someone else's site has no footer and no consent UI of ours at all — consent there is governed by the page hosting it.) Clearing this site's stored browser data removes the consent cookie and any local-storage fallback, and you are asked again on your next visit. You can also turn off ad personalization for your Google account at Google My Ad Center.

Your recorded local consent is scoped to what the banner said when you gave it. An older acceptance from before advertising was introduced covers analytics only and never grants advertising. In covered regions, even a previous local accepted-ads choice cannot authorize the certified flow; Google must provide its own completed consent record. If those controls cannot load, local acceptance stays unavailable and our analytics stays off.

In covered regions, opening "Cookie settings" preserves your choice. Selecting the separate "Manage consent with Google" action contacts Google and asks it to clear its current consent record and show a new choice. This action is not acceptance. Your local rejection remains in force until you complete a new choice in those controls. If Google is unavailable, you can keep the rejection and continue using the calculators.

If your browser cannot save the consent cookie, we try local storage with the same 365-day expiry. If neither method is available, your choice still applies on the current page, and a notice explains that it could not be saved for future visits. Clearing this site's stored browser data removes both forms of saved choice.

Rejecting changes consent signals immediately and deletes the known, accessible first-party cookies described above. We repeat those deletion attempts when an in-flight Google script finishes loading and once after a short delay. Already-running third-party code cannot be unloaded, and these bounded attempts cannot guarantee that it will never write another cookie during the current page view. We preserve your calculator inputs rather than automatically reloading the page.

Children's Privacy

overlanding.tools is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Governing Law

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of overlanding.tools after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
